Pacifica Releases Financial Statement Showing KPFK With $182K Surplus At July 31

Pacifica released a preliminary income statement for the 10 month period from October 1, 2014 to July 31, 2015.

The income statement, presuming the network’s famously bad accounting records can be relied on, shows the station’s Los Angeles unit KPFK-FM, which just placed every employee on half-time and laid off three due to a “dire financial crisis,” with an operating surplus of $182,000 for the year and the largest amount of listener support in the network, over $800,000 more than the nearest competing division, Berkeley’s KPFA.

Secret Corporation and We’re Proud of It

This sound snippet contains the conversation at the KPFA local station board meeting on August 22nd about the secret incorporation of the KPFA Foundation by Margy Wilkinson at the office of attorney Dan Siegel.

Seems like the best excuse they can come up with for incorporating a new nonprofit to “capture” Pacifica’s licenses is to accuse others of doing (with no evidence) what they just got caught doing.

That’s what scoundrels do. Yell really loudly that everyone else is doing it too.

Two Credit Cards Are Better Than One

Berkeley -The severe financial distress at KPFK-FM, which resulted on Monday in an announcement by Margy Wilkinson-appointed general manager Leslie Radford of the immediate reduction of all KPFK employees to 50% work schedules and the layoff of three employees, has been accompanied by growing evidence of a year and a half of financial mismanagement of the station, Pacifica’s highest earner as recently as 2013. KPFK abruptly fired its second consecutive temporary business manager after finding out about monthly checks issued to an outside person by the business manager, along with unauthorized cash advances never paid back. The business manager was personally hired and trained by former CFO Raul Salvador to “fix” the accounting mess at KPFK in the fall of 2014, and per a motion passed by the national board in 2014, reported directly to Salvador rather than the station’s general manager. SAG-AFTRA: KPFK Staff Reductions Never Negotiated With Union

The bargaining unit for KPFK’s SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild / American Federation of Radio and Television Artists) affiliated employees notifies members that the schedule reductions and layoffs announced by GM Radford on Monday at a staff meeting and later that evening on the radio station during a Report to the Listener, were not negotiated with nor agreed to by the labor union that represents the workers.

KPFK Work Reductions Letter – August 17, 2015

Leslie Radford presented this work schedule reduction less than three months after being hired by Margy Wilkinson as the station’s general manager.

The reductions include three staff members, 2 unionized and at least 4 months of reduction to half time for the station’s remaining 50 staffers. Continue reading KPFK Work Reductions Letter – August 17, 2015

Forget About That Election Thing

dove-300x176

BerkeleyOn Thursday night, Pacifica’s election supervisor announced that despite soliciting over 100 local board candidates across the country, the Pacifica Foundation would not be mailing ballots to its 55,000 members on August 29th to replace 72 local and national board members squatting in their seats for the 20th month past the expiration of their elected terms. The reason given: an inability to pay the approximately $50,000 printing and postage bill. Continue reading Forget About That Election Thing

August 15th Homophobia Special on KPFK

Among other questionable Radford programming decisions at KPFK contributing to plummeting fund drive results, the new manager put the struggling pledge drive on a “break” this weekend to air a 30-hour Afrikan Mental Liberation Marathon, an independently produced dawn to dusk black nationalist-oriented program . The program has disturbed queer-identified listeners with aggressively homophobic positions presented with little to no counterpoint.

A KPFK staffer provided this clip of an interview with female psychiatrist Frances Cress Welsing in which she compares queer sex to human-dog mating, states that male semen is a dietary protein like sweet potatoes and greens, and that homosexuality in Ancient Greece was caused by shock at the larger sizes of African genitals – among other bizarre statements deeply disrespectful towards LBGT people. You can hear for yourself here.

Majority on Pacifica Board Refuse To Discuss Secret Corporation to Acquire KPFA License

Berkeley – In a shameful display, the majority on the Pacifica National Board refused to discuss the public matter of the 2013 secret incorporation of the KPFA Foundation by Margy Wilkinson and Dan Siegel for the purpose of acquiring KPFA’s broadcast license. Some More Questions for Dan Siegel About The KPFA Foundation

Dan Siegel’s response to the many inquiries regarding the establishment of the headquarters of the KPFA Foundation at his personal law firm office is below.

Pacifica National Board member Stephen Brown’s comments about Mr. Siegel’s statements having limited veracity are well-advised, but if taken at face value, here are some questions that arise:

1) “There is nothing “clandestine” about the creation of the KPFA Foundation”.

Dictionary.com: [klan-des-tin]. Characterized by, done in, or executed with secrecy or concealment, especially for purposes of subversion or deception; private or surreptitious: “Their clandestine meetings went undiscovered for two years”.
