Desperation To Keep The Doors Open at KPFA

*Note: Readers are encouraged to donate to the Pacifica stations during the current set of fund drives, including KPFA. This post is provided here for two reasons

a) To document that the blizzard of Save KPFA propaganda about the Berkeley station being financially stable and in the black, always meeting its fund drive goals and an example for the rest of the network about how to be professional was always deceptive and the station has been living paycheck to paycheck for a very long time, as many UCR and PDGG board members have tried to point out for years and at various times, to ameliorate.

and

b) Concerns long raised that the aging of the station’s audience, the failure to reach out to new and younger audiences and the station’s disconnect from local social justice movements were and would continue to exert a financial toll, were not misplaced.

This memo was sent from KPFA’s general manager to the full staff list.

All:

You all deserve a huge pat on the back for the impressive work you’ve been delivering. What’s most notable is how this new movement has ignited our team and has united our station in our coverage of the street protests.Thank you for cross promoting, contributing to other shows, exchanging contacts, and a special shout out to all the courageous reporters who have volunteered to be in the center of the action. Down the road this will pay off for us in acquiring new listeners and solidifying our reputation as the station that provides the people a voice, to speak truth to power.

Thank you all!

That said we are at a critical point in the fund drive. We are woefully behind in reaching our goal by the 19th and I’m asking you to shift your focus. While there is a lot going on with the drive, upcoming craft fair and staying locked in with all the demonstrations and vigils, I cannot stress enough how desperately we need the money to keep our doors open.

I’m hopeful that all of the energy, spirit and passion around the local and national discourse will inspire our listenership to continue to support us in our efforts.

Don’t forget to stress this to our community!

Much respect,

Q
