“I was listening when Brian told everyone the “good” news about Sonali taking over the 8 a.m. M-F time slot. I was taken aback, a little shocked even and waited to hear about the Morning Mix people and programs. There was nothing; zip, not one mention. Poof they were disappeared just like that. I couldn’t get that out of my mind. It was confusing and irritating. How could this be a community radio station without mentioning what happened to the community people and their well thought out programing? Something was very wrong. Here I am a supporter of SAVEKPFA. At your request I put my name out there publically on the web. When someone recognized my name and sent me an email I engaged them.
I am deeply disappointed. I’ve been a grassroots community organizer since the 60s listening to ksan, and randomly began listening to Alan Watts on kpfa back in the early 70s. I haven’t had a television since the early 80s and pretty much have relied on kpfa for news, views, music, culture, and everything else. I contribute as much as I can whenever I can. I also encourage people to listen to the station.
Since the so called “good” news I’ve been meaning to sit down and write an actual snail mail, but that hasn’t happened. Quite frankly I’m not only disappointed, I’m upset. For a community station to disappear important community people and their programing in one fell swoop shows a basic lack of respect for everyone concerned including listeners. The Morning Mix is the perfect programing complement before Amy Goodman. Sonali’s show is too similar to Democracy Now. I tune out, or have turned off the radio until Democracy Now. I have to be at work at 10 a.m. so listen to the end of Amy as I get to work. When I heard a day or so later the Morning Mix programmers were offered afternoon slots after the fact something shifted inside me. This felt less and less like “we’re in this together” community radio. I work; I can’t listen during the day so the Morning Mix is lost to me and most everyone else who works.
