Litmus Test

BerkeleyThe “reason” for the abrupt breaching of executive director Summer Reese’s contract appears to be a bit of a moving target as the date for the preliminary injunction hearing on May 6th inches closer and closer.  KPFK producer Ian Masters has jumped into the fray.  While earlier reports said Reese was fired because she didn’t have a social security number, Master’s breathlessly announced his discovery of a political donation to the Libertarian National Committee by Reese. The $250 donation from 14 years ago (date 6-27-2000) is from an individual providing a Washington DC address.

Reese points out that on 6-27-2000, she was living in San Bernardino, CA and about to become pregnant with her child. The websbite howmanyofme.com reports 7 people named Summer Reese in the United States, including 4 living on the east coast.

The witch-hunt by Masters, however inaccurate, introduces a broader question about whether the left-leaning national radio network does, or should have, political litmus tests for employees and board members. These have been rejected in the past, when Save-KPFA affiliated national board member Sarv Randawa made several financial contributions to the Republican party and later married the chair of the San Francisco Republican Party.  2013 KPFT Pacifica National Board member Nancy Hentschel lists the “Libertarians of Harris County” among her 5 Facebook affinity groups.

Besides demonstrating ideological double standards among many of Reese’s critics, Masters’ attempted smear represents a bit of a black mark on the Pacifica that celebrated for decades KPFA host Bill Mandel telling the House Committee on Un-American Activities  and Senator Joe McCarthy to go to hell.

An open letter signed by hundreds of the network’s staffers and supporters objecting to the breach of Reese’s contract can be found here.

5 board members affiliated with the Pacifica Directors for Good Governance (PDGG) tried at the last board meeting to append to the minutes a statement about their temporary resignations during the tumultuous in-person meeting in February in Washington DC, where the 2014 board first attempted to fire Reese one week after assuming their seats. Such requests are usually pro forma, but in this case, the board voted down the addendum as well as half-a-dozen factual corrections to the minutes, claiming they were “out of time” and could not hear the objections. Their statement is provided here in its entirety.

The PDGG directors have called a special meeting for April 27th to address the falsified minutes and the on-going lack of corporate counsel, but are not sure their colleagues on their majority will attend the meeting.

Replacement interim executive director Bernard Duncan appears to be still in Los Angeles after missing two appointments in Berkeley on Thursday, falling ill and flying back to Southern California on Thursday. Duncan has stated his intention to remain in the position for “only a few months” promising ongoing instability at the radio network that has had 11 executive directors in the past 10 years.

Reese has continued to report to work at the national headquarters since March 17th.
