Money Down The Drain

The so-called “New KPFK” post-midnight weekday schedule will kick off on Monday January 11th. It turns out new may not be so new, as the first two hours consist of a bunch of old George Carlin comedy routines. After that, Radford’s roommate Adam Rice DJ’s for an hour.

The station’s rapidly dwindling audience will have to transition from the station’s spanish language only block into George Carlin into loud rap music and then into Something’s Happening which will kick off at 3:00am with Don Oscar Miro-Quesada, “The Healing Light” : a program flow that virtually no audience will sustain.

The financial implications of Radford’s decision look to be severe based on an examination of the December statistics. Something’s Happening, which booked $14,952 in pledges or 5% of the entire station’s total, *was* one of 22 regularly scheduled programs the station airs over the seven days of the week in the 9:00pm to 6:00am hours.  Here are the other 21:

Informativo Pacifica, Voces De Libertad, Insurgencia Feminina, CentroAmerica Sin Censura, Contragolpe, Encuentros, Ill Radio, Nuestra Voz, Enfoque Latino, Truthseekas, Soundwaves, Asiatic Rhythmz, Breakbeats and Rhymes, All of the Above, Nightscapes, Rise, Stairway to Heaven, Counterspin, Travel Tips For Azatlan, Adventures in Stereo and Headroom.

Something’s Happening raised 88% of the pledges generated by all 22 of these programs.  In less than 45% of the hours.

16 of the regularly scheduled programs did not collect even one pledge according to the station’s published fund drive records. Several of them were pre-empted by Radford and program director Alan Minsky after one fund drive attempt to be replaced by repeats of senior producer Christine Blosdale’s fund drive pitches or reruns of the Aware Show.

These 16 programs that didn’t raise a dime for the station occupy 21 and a half hours of broadcast time, almost twice as many hours as Radford claimed she had to remove from Something’s Happening because the station had to “make more money”.

now ends with a new correction put on prior-post = klan-alluding & calling another critical prior article about KPFK’s new ‘Safe Harbor’ program that had *claimed permission* from FCC incorrectly. Language considered normally profane or obscene, and unacceptable for our airwaves were stated on that KPFK program [12M-3am weeknights]. But the defensive article author NOW changed their tune to say :

“NOTE: This post originally stated, “KPFK has taken advantage of the “Safe Harbor” policy of the FCC, which allows for profanity and even a few obscenities, between midnight and 6 am.” It has been changed to state “and some indecent speech.” Obscenities are never, ever allowed on the airwaves at any time. …. https://www.facebook.com/notes/thandisizwe-chimurenga/the…”

Original article posted said “When you hear White Citizen’s Council/KKK rhetoric, expose it for what it is….” and so accusing other opinions to be racist or white supremacist maybe ?

    1. Not sending any more $upport is exactly what they want. The agenda is clearly to bankrupt the station then sell it off to the newly created “Pacifica foundation” at pennies on the dollar.

      1. It does indeed appear that way. The first replacement for two hours of the Something’s Happening show was, as mentioned, George Carlin routines. I love George Carlin and profanity doesn’t offend me, but the routines we full of dozens of words proscribed by the FCC and, I believe fine-able each time they occur. And the money required to pay just one fine could be financially crippling to the station. It’s hard for me to believe that the programmers are so ill trained and ill informed that they would not know the consequences of broadcasting the routines whole cloth.
