Dear Sonali Kolhatkar,
I appreciate and applaud your programs and support your efforts, having been a regular listener for the 7 am on KPFA as well as on-line via KPFK archives. Regarding the placement by fiat of Uprising 5 days/week 8-9 am, in lieu of the Morning Mix, I appeal for you to stand up, decline and refuse to allow your program to be used to supplant the Five great local Morning mix programs at KPFA. A sudden programming change was announced only five days ago to replace the Morning Mix, a programming collective including: Continue reading “The” Uprising at KPFA

It’s not a minute to soon rescue Free Speech Radio KPFA and Pacifica.
Stand Strong and draw the line at the Morning Mix!
On the evening of May 21, Morning Mix producers were told that their programs were cancelled. Some have been moved to other spots in the schedule. Others were cancelled entirely.
On May 23, Save KPFA sent an e-mail blast happily announcing that the Morning Mix will be replaced by Uprising Radio with host Sonali Kolhatkar. Ms. Kolhatkar is a long-time collaborator of Brian Edwards-Tiekert whose program UpFront runs from 7-8 am.
Insiders predict that the two programs will eventually merge, making Mr. Edwards-Tiekert the gatekeeper of all the morning prime time hours at KPFA.
Diversity is an strong theme for those who think this change is a spectacularly bad idea. This is from a statement by Morning Mix Host Sabrina Jacobs:
The People of Color that are affiliated with KPFA and Pacifica Radio will not be silenced until the questions of all those concerned are answered. The world outside of this “bubble” that has been created where white supremacy reigns will cease to exist when the necessary changes are made and our demands to be treated equally are heard and executed, post haste.
Dennis Bernstein and Miguel Molina talk about the changes on Flashpoints.

“This is Miguel Gavilan Molina. It has come to my attention that this past Wednesday – the same day that Pacifica’s new interim executive director was introducing the staff of KPFA to the three finalists for the general manager position – KPFA’s outgoing interim manager was slashing and scattering the Morning Mix and removing it from the morning. In the 9th week of our occupation of the Pacifica HQ, on May 12th, the judge ruled against us, issuing a temporary restraining order against Executive Director Summer Reese’s continued presence at the national office. We’d already decided that in case of such an event, we’d evacuate, withdraw from the building. So about a dozen of us went to the Pacifica HQ and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening packing up, eating pizza, and discussing details of how we were going to move on. Berkeley-As the first week after the TRO ruling passes, the extent of the shaky foundation of the 2014 rogue board continues to emerge. The lack of eligibility of not one, but two of the twelve directors claiming to constitute the majority of the board is unquestionable. Boards of directors of CA nonprofit organizations have only the powers and authorities vested in them by the organization’s bylaws, and in this case, that’s not looking like anything at all. Berkeley-While waiting for the next court appearance on June 3rd, disconnects between vacuous executive reports and the reality of the grim situation at Pacifica are vivid. A bizarre chair’s report (the document can be found here, professes ignorance about the financial state of the network. It also states the hijacked workplace investigation report about multiple complaints against the re-hired CFO that has been in Wilkinson’s sole possession since March 17th, will be released to the board after Pacifica’s HR firm returns a call. Wilkinson’s contention appears to be a phone call she placed in March has not been returned for two months, preventing her from releasing the report to the rest of the board. Co-hosts of the Project Censored show on the Morning Mix at KPFA Berkeley
Late in the evening on Wednesday May 21 the volunteer hosts for the Morning Mix show (8:00-9:00 AM weekdays) were sent an e-mail stating that the program was being permanently replaced by a daily show from KPFK in LA. This was a total surprise to Mix producers as just the previous Friday the Interim General Manager of KPFA/KPFK told us in his office that program changes would be discussed and reviewed by the new KPFA manager to be hired in June and nothing would happen until a new manager was in place.
